Located on the shores of the St. Lawrence River at the Canadian border, family-owned Spicer Marine Basin in upstate New York serves the residents and visitors of Jefferson County – a thriving summer destination known for its history and beautiful outdoors.

Spicer Marine Basin Owner Chris Frank, who co-owns the dealership with his parents, Dan and Karen, and wife, Alta, said his family purchased the business nine years ago. The dealership not only serves as a place to purchase a Carolina Skiff, but also as a local marina, boat rental, winter storage and repairs.

Before joining the CSkiff family, Chris said he had done a lot of research on the popular boat brand.

“What we really like about the brand is the construction,” he said. “The ‘no-wood, no-rot’ makes a lot of sense to us. We like that. We like the value you get with each boat that they have.”

Chris added that the Carolina Skiff model line is perfect for the waters around Jefferson County and beyond.

“The things that are popular here are fishing [and] water sports,” he explained. “A lot of customers have [vacation] homes on the islands [and] you get a lot of kids who are learning to use boats and do everything, so it works really well for that type of boater too – young ones learning how to run a boat.”

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Chris said the area in and around Clayton grew tremendously over the summer. Additionally, to accommodate social distancing, he said his team now offers virtual boat showings and tours via FaceTime. He said the dealership has also increased its online presence more than ever before on Facebook and Instagram.

Beginning Oct. 12 until Spring, Spicer Marine Basin’s hours will change because of the colder winter months. The dealership will be open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday by appointment only.
